China readies for bumper Singles Day online sale tomorrow

Last year, China's biggest online retailer, Alibaba has raked up USD 10 billion sales creating a new record.

Beijing: China is expecting up to 760 million online orders on the Singles' Day on Wednesday during which people in the world's second largest economy would log on to portals selling variety of goods at cheapest possible rates.

Widely recognised as the anti-Valentine's day, November 11 has become the country's biggest annual commercial holiday.

China's State Post Bureau estimates that the number of express deliveries will reach 760 million from November 11 to 16, about 42 percent more than last year.

Daily volume is expected to top 160 million, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Last year, China's biggest online retailer, Alibaba has raked up USD 10 billion sales creating a new record.

This year the sales volume was expected to cross that.

Wang Chaobo, senior operation expert at Alibaba, said it has expanded volume of its cloud computing system, which enables 4 million orders for a single online retailer on a daily basis.

The volume has been enlarged by 62 percent from last year, he said, adding that preparations started in June.

More than 10 million items, most of which were bought by Chinese buyers through the pre-sales scheme, have been shipped in customs clearing of the Hangzhou Economic and Technological district.

Goods include milk powder, diapers and cosmetics from the US, Australia, the Republic of Korea and Germany.

Express delivery services like EMS, SF Express, Zhongtong and Yuantong have made necessary preparations for the hike of deliveries.

Ni Genyan, vice operation chief of Zhongtong express delivery, said its October volume has surpassed its November volume as many online shopping malls launched their sales early this year.
