The year 2014 saw some of best in the world of technology - from smartwatches to cheap 4G smartphones, HD displays on budget smartphones, the best of tablets and not to forget Apple Pay.

And as a new year comes in, it is highly expected that technology will be taken to a new level. Therefore, let's take a look at the five things in technology that will define 2015.

Affordable wearable gear

·Smartwatches are getting better designed, and are becoming more flaunt-worthy
·The game is set to really change as the new-age mobile disruptors--Micromax, Xiaomi etc--launch ultra-affordable devices

Virtual reality is finally coming to consumers

·Companies like Oculus are very close to launching a consumer device
·Other companies--Epson, Sony, Samsung--are actively working on consumer VR products for launch this year

The promise of affordable wireless broadband

·4G is almost upon us with every major telco planning mass rollout in 2015
·As a technology, 4G is orders of magnitude better on reliability (signal quality) and speed (upload/download bandwidths)
·4G hardware is getting cheaper, with many capable phones being launched costing under Rs 10,000
· Expect there to be a price war with Telcos, with consumers standing to win

Software on rental

·Many of the big companies are now releasing new versions of their software as subscription services, where you pay to use
·The era of perpetual licenses seems to be coming to an end
·Subscription services tie in to value add-ons like free online storage, bundled mobile apps, and access to all new versions

Resolution, resolution, resolution

·Phones will support higher screen resolutions, because there are newer applications that will take advantage of it
·Mobile-based virtual reality and screencasting apps will necessitate Full HD and even UHD (2K/4K) resolutions on phones
