4% of monthly global domain name registrations are from India

Over the past few months, there has been a rapid increase in domain name registrations, particularly from the country with the monthly additions rising to 2 percent from an average of 1.5 percent of the global registrations.

Mumbai: With a rapidly growing number of Internet users and a surge in e-commerce transactions, the average monthly domain name registrations in the country has more than doubled to 4 percent of all global registrations, according to industry estimates.

This, however, is way behind the additions in China, which accounts for 20-22 percent of monthly new domain name registrations globally.

"Close to 4 percent of all global registrations now happen from India," web-hosting company BigRock India's Shashank Mehrotra told PTI.

"Over the past few months, there has been a rapid increase in domain name registrations, particularly from the country with the monthly additions rising to 2 percent from an average of 1.5 percent of the global registrations," Mehrotra added.

There is also a huge rise in the numbers of Internet users in the country, thanks to the surge in online shopping, he said.

On the huge numbers in China, which is the largest online market, he said China has also doubled its rate of domain name additions.

BigRock hosts websites for Warner Brothers, Fiat India, Adidas, Yatra.Com, HP Gas, Star Network, and Kotak Securities, among others and competes with larger players like GoDaddy, HostGator and Net4India.

According to a report by US-based network infrastructure company Verisign released in March, the December quarter of 2014 closed with a base of 288 million global domain name registrations across all top-level domains an increase of 4 million names from the year ago period.

According to former Wall Street-analyst-turned late-stage-venture-capitalist Mary Meeker, while the number of online users has plateaued in the last two-three years globally, India is among the top countries that is adding new online users.

There are 232 million Internet users in the country, which is growing over 37 percent and 65 percent of them access the net from their mobiles, she said.
