Tokyo stocks open flat

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which finished at its best level since April 2000 on Thursday, inched up 5.50 points to 20,208.37 at the start.

Tokyo: Tokyo stocks opened flat on Friday after Wall Street saw modest gains, as investors awaited the outcome of the Bank of Japan`s policy meeting later in the day.

The Nikkei 225 index at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, which finished at its best level since April 2000 on Thursday, inched up 5.50 points to 20,208.37 at the start.

On Thursday, the S&P 500 crept to a new record high following strong earnings from Best Buy and news that CVS Health would acquire senior pharmacy services company Omnicare for $12.7 billion.

The S&P 500 gained 0.23 percent to 2,130.82 while the tech-rich Nasdaq rose 0.38 percent and the Dow was flat.

Bank of Japan Governor Haruhiko Kuroda is scheduled to give a news conference later Friday after the end of the central bank`s monetary policy meeting.

The dollar was at 121.03 yen in early Asian trade, lower than 121.07 yen in New York late Thursday.

The euro bought $1.1107 and 134.45 yen against $1.1112 and 134.52 yen in US trade.
