The benchmark BSE Sensex dropped 250 points in afternoon trade Wednesday on weak monsoon forecast.

India's monsoon rains could be below average in 2015 due to an impact of El Nino weather pattern, which can bring on a dry spell in the region, the weather office said today.

Rains are expected to be 93 percent of a long-term average, Earth Science Minister Harsh Vardhan said, after releasing the forecast of the India Meteorological Department.

The 30-share index, which had lost 1,368.40 points in the previous five sessions, declined further by 248.50 points, or 0.90 percent, at 27,427.54.

Also, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty slipped below the 8,300-mark by falling 79.65 points, or 0.95 percent, at 8,298.10.
