Reversing early losses, the benchmark BSE Sensex quoted higher by over 220 points in closing hour of trade Thursday on buying mainly in metals, power, realty and capital goods stocks.
The Sensex resumed slightly higher at 24,828.38 and moved in a range of 24,644.88 and 25,044.06 before quoting at 25,025.90, showing a gain of 220.07 points, or 0.89 percent, from its last close.
The NSE 50-share Nifty also moved up by 78.15 points, or 1.06 percent, to 7,480.40.
Major gainers were Sesa Goa (6.01 percent), Hindalco (4.27 percent), Hindustan Unilever (4.24 percent), Tata Motors (2.93 percent) and Tata Steel (2.53 percent).
Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought shares worth a net Rs 192.56 crore as per provisional data from the stock exchanges.
In Asia, the Nikkei ended 0.1 percent higher at 15,079.37, the highest closing level since March 11.
