The BSE benchmark Sensex declined by 161.49 points to end at 28,338.05, marking its biggest single-day fall in nearly 6 weeks.
The NSE Nifty also closed 67.05 points down at 8,463.10 after making an intra-day record high of 8,535.35 earlier.
The 30-share index, which had gained 466.69 points in the previous three sessions, dropped by 161.49 points, or 0.57 percent, to 28,338.05 after moving in range of 28,217.50 - 28,541.22.
ITC Ltd slumped 5 percent, contributing the most to the index`s fall after the health ministry accepted the recommendation of an internal panel to ban the sale of single cigarettes.
Worries over potential delay in Insurance Bill and new offshore derivative rules also weighed on market sentiment.
