Mumbai: Extending their record-breaking run, the BSE benchmark Sensex climbed 82.78 points to hit yet another record of 28,260.66 while Nifty scaled new peak of 8,447.40 in opening trade on Tuesday.

Sensex yesterday surged 131.22 points to end at new peak of 28,177.88 and the Nifty rose 40.85 points to fresh closing high of 8,430.75 on the back of positive cues on the trade deficit front and robust gains logged by SBI and Tata Motors.

Continued buying by funds and retail investors amid cooling inflation and falling global fuel prices influenced trading sentiments, brokers said, adding these factors have raised hopes of a rate cut by the RBI and further economic reforms by the government.

Besides, a firming trend at other Asian bourses too supported the rising trend, they said.

"The market mood remained negative amidst mixed sentiments but it picked up steam in the last 90 minutes of the trading session.... Trade deficit in October declined. FII flows and hopes from the winter session of Parliament would keep the sentiments upbeat for the next 1-2 weeks," said Rakesh Goyal, Senior Vice President, Bonanza Portfolio.
