Sensex breaches 26,000 mark for the 1st time, Nifty at new high

The 30-share BSE index after commencing higher, surged to breach the 26,000 mark. It hit the day's high of 26,116.73, before quoting 117.80 points, or 0.45 percent higher at 26,079.86.

The benchmark Sensex created history on Monday by breaching the 26,000 mark for the first time on heavy buying by overseas investors amid pre-Budget optimism.

Investors expect Budget to raise revenue, including from sales of state-run firms, while keep spending under control.

Presentation of the first Budget by the Narendra Modi government will be the highlight of the over month-long session of Parliament starting today amidst signals that the issue of price rise could generate heat.

While presentation of the Railway Budget is scheduled for July 8, the economic survey will be released the next day and Union Budget 2014-2015 will be presented on July 10.

The 30-share BSE index after commencing higher, surged to breach the 26,000 mark. It hit the intra-day's high of 26,116.73 earlier, before quoting 117.80 points, or 0.45 percent higher at 26,079.86.

The 50-share NSE Nifty last quoted up 27.35 points or 0.35 percent at 7,778.95 after making a high of 7,791.40.
