NSE sees record high at Rs 41,165 cr in cash market segment

Mumbai: Leading bourse NSE Tuesday saw record volumes in equity trading at nearly Rs 41,165 crore helped by a huge bulk deal worth over Rs 20,000 crore in Sun Pharma.

As many as 98.3 crore shares were traded on the National Stock Exchange amounting to a turnover of Rs 41,164.95 crore, a record high for a day, the bourse said.

The bourse's previous record stood at Rs 40,150.91 crore on May 19, 2009.

The high volumes in the cash segment come amid Japan's Daiichi Sankyo selling its entire stake of about 9 percent in Indian drug major Sun Pharmaceutical for over Rs 20,420 crore.

Daiichi which had forayed into the Indian pharmaceutical market by buying a majority stake in Ranbaxy Laboratories in 2008 for Rs 22,000 crore, today sold over 21 crore shares in Sun Pharma.

In comparison to NSE, equity market turnover on the BSE today stood at Rs 4,021.67 crore with a total number of 86.86 crore shares traded.
