New Delhi: Post offices can now issue ATM-cum-debit cards for savings account holders, as per a new amendment in the rules.

The government has issued a gazette notification amending the Post Office Savings Bank General Rules, 1981, stating, “In case of an account standing at any post office with a core banking solution platform in place, the Post office Savings Bank shall issue ATM or debit card to the account holder on payment of such fee as may be prescribed by the Central Government.”

However such facility can be opted only by the post offices that are on core banking solution (CBS) platform software. These are electronic network branches.

Customers would be able to withdraw money anywhere using ATM cards and services of electronic transfer of money will be made available to them.

As part of the India Post's end-to-end 'IT Modernisation Project 2012' aimed to equip itself with modern tools and technologies, the CBS will enable customers to operate their accounts and avail account-related services from any post office in the country.
