New Delhi: The Union government is in the final stage to revamp Planning commission, sources told Zee Media on Wednesday. A final decision on the same is likely within 3-4 days.

The government is also set to decide upon the member and deputy chairman in the next 3-4 days.

Sources in the know have hinted that BJP leader Yaswant Sinha is likely to be the deputy chairman of the planning commission.

Other members of the planning commission will be from renowned economic and social background.

Planning Minister Rao Inderjit Singh had last month underlined the need for streamlining the role of the Planning Commission, the country's apex policy making body which is yet to be reconstituted by the new government.

The Narendra Modi government is yet to reconstitute the Planning Commission, the term of which is co-terminus with the government. The Prime Minister is the Chairman of the Commission.

Dismantling the legacy of UPA rule, Modi had on May 31 abolished all the 30 Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoMs) and Group of Ministers (GoMs) and told ministries and departments concerned to take decisions on pending matters. He said the Prime Minister's Office will assist ministries in tackling complex issues.

Announcing the decision to scrap nine EGoMs and 21 GoMs, the PMO had said this would expedite the process of decision-making and "usher in greater accountability in the system."

EGoMs had the power to take decisions on the line of the Union Cabinet. The recommendations of the GoMs were to be placed before the Cabinet for a final call.
