Banks have opened a whopping 5.29 crore new accounts so far under the flagship Jan Dhan programme.

Led by state-run banks, the system has opened 5.29 crore accounts under PMJDY of which 3.12 crore in rural and 2.17 crore accounts are in urban areas. RuPay cards have been issued for 1.78 crore accounts.

The Jan Dhan scheme was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his Independence Day address and was formally launched on August 28.

On the opening day itself, banks opened over 1.5 crore accounts. The government has set a target to open 7.5 crore such no-frills accounts by Republic Day next year.

Each of these accounts comes with Rs. 5,000 overdraft facility and Rs. 1 lakh accident cover and is linked only to the RuPay cards.
