Kolkata: The West Bengal government was seriously committed to the development of the MSME sector in the state as it had the largest job creation potential, state's Finance and Industry Minister Amit Mitra said on Saturday.
"The government is seriously committed to the development of the of the MSME sector as this is the only avenue to generate huge job opportunities," Mitra said at the AGM of Bengal National Chamber of Commerce here.
He said there are about 5,000 registered MSME units in the state and numerous in the unorganised sector.
The registered units are employing more than 30,000 people, while lakhs are engaged in the unorganised sector, Mitra said.
He said the state had witnessed better growth in overall SDP, industry, agriculture and services as compared to the national average despite the huge debt burden.
Last night, speaking at the AGM of Indian Tea Association (ITA), Mitra had said the state was ready to extend support to the growth of the tea industry as the production volumes generated here was 240 million kg out of the total production of 1,000 million kg per annum.
