Success of Jan Dhan is a matter of pride for India: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the success of his pet-project Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) scheme as overwhelming and said it was a matter of pride for the nation.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed the success of his pet-project Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) scheme as overwhelming and said it was a matter of pride for the nation.

PM Modi tweeted, "The unprecedented success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana is overwhelming. This is a matter of pride for the entire Nation."

According to the Finance Ministry report on Tuesday, 11.5 crore bank accounts have been opened under the Jan Dhan scheme so far, exceeding the enhanced target of 10 crore set for January 26.

PMJDY has covered 99.74 percent of households in the country, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said.

PM Modi also congratulated the state governments, banks and the Finance Ministry for the success of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana.

"We embarked on PMJDY with an aim to integrate the poor with our financial system. The comprehensive extent of its coverage is gladdening!" he tweeted further.

The success of PMJDY sets the stage for a major transformation for the people & will enhance India's progress, Modi said in his tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the financial inclusion scheme in his first Independence Day speech last year. It was launched in August with a target to open bank accounts for 7.5 crore poor persons by January 26, 2015. The target was later increased to 10 crore accounts.

According to reports, the Prime Minister's ambitious initiative financial inclusion scheme has made its way into the Guinness World Records for opening the highest number of bank accounts in the least time.
