New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that opposition to Goods and services tax (GST) is similar to committing suicide, adding that no party will try to do so.
In a written response to the questions being asked by Economic Times, Modi said that GST has been the most extensively discussed and debated law in India's history.
“In our history, I do not think there has been any law which has been debated as extensively and as long and at as many levels as the GST Bill,” he told the ET.
Stressing that states like UP, Bihar and West Bengal will be the “biggest beneficiaries” after the successful implementation of GST, Modi further told ET that it will “benefit the poor through buoyancy of revenue”.
He also added that the poorest states will benefit the most from GST.
Without divulging any details on the deadline of implementation of GST, an “optimistic” Modi said that he believes “more in lifelines than in deadlines.”
