National Food Security Act gets 3 months' extension

Presently, only 5 states have implemented the Food Security Act and 6 states have implemented the Act partially.

New Delhi: Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan on Thursday said implementation of National Food Security Act has been extended by three months and all the states of the country will get a time frame of three-months to implement the Act.

The Act aims at providing highly-subsidised food grains to 800 million poor people in addition to continuation of the support price for the farmers.

Presently, only 5 states have implemented the Food Security Act and 6 states have implemented the Act partially. Paswan also stated that that the food distribution system of India is not upto the mark.

The Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will also meet the state food ministers on July 4. The subsidy for food is seen at Rs 1.06 lakh crore. Additional subsidy for Food Security Act is seen at Rs 25,000 crore.

Meanwhile, the minister also said the country is ready for weak monsoon and containing the price rise remains the top priority for the government.
