New Delhi: The Lok Sabha on Monday night unanimously passed the amendments to the GST Bill recommended by the Rajya Sabha.
Tabled in the Lower House for debate after the GST Constitutional Bill was passed by the Upper House, all 443 member present in the house voted in favour of the bill.
Barring AIADMK, all political parties today supported the GST Constitution Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha but asked the government to ensure that there is no adverse fallout on inflation and that states have some say in deciding the tax rate.
The Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha in May 2015, was taken up again by the House to approve the changes made in it by the Rajya Sabha last week.
Addressing the debate in the Lower House, PM Modi said the GST was a victory for the people of India and not any party or the BJP.
Thanking the Congress and all political parties for their support in passing the bill, PM Modi said national interest was higher than political interest and that the GST Bill was one big step towards the pursuit to fight and end tax terrorism.
He also said the new regime of indirect taxation will make consumer the "king".
He emphasised in Lok Sabha that the passage of the GST Constitution Amendment Bill by Parliament was not a victory of any party or government but was everybody's victory as it highlighted the success of the democratic ethos of the country.
Intervening in a debate on Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, Modi asserted that the GST will benefit mainly those states which are considered backward and address the problem of imbalanced development.
