Indigenous production of STBs: Javadekar holds meeting

Javadekar has repeatedly emphasised that encouraging indigenous production of STBs is a priority.

New Delhi: With an aim to boost indigenous production, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar on Tuesday held a meeting with makers of electronic goods and discussed various issues related to domestic manufacture of STBs.

The government is following a deadline according to which complete digitisation will be ushered in the cable sector by the end of this year for which an estimated 12 crore STBs are needed.

However, in the first two phases of the digitisation drive which covered the major cities of the country, a vast majority of the STBs used were imported from other countries.

After taking over, Javadekar has repeatedly emphasised that encouraging indigenous production of STBs is a priority.

"A meeting was held regarding indigenous production of STBs and various measures were discussed. Among the several measures being discussed were how production of STBs can be incentivised," an I&B ministry official said.

"Listened to the grievances of STBs Manufactures & issues in # indigenisation of Digitisation. We'll work for resolving them," Javadekar tweeted after the meeting.
