New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched the 1st National Handloom Day in Chennai.

Speaking at the launch event, Modi said that handloom can become an efficient tool to fight poverty.

“India is home to several handloom products. The handloom sector has inherent strengths that we need to market,” said Modi.

Recalling that he had on 2nd October last year asked people to use one item of khaadi products to brighten up lives of artisans, Modi said that sale of khaadi has gone up by 60 percent as compared to same period last year.

Emphasising the need to popularise handloom among the youth, Modi said, “ We have many options to enhance use handlooms in our daily lives. People, specially women wear handloom clothes on special occasions like marriages or festivals. We need popularise this among youth.”

He also stressed upon making handloom the centre piece of fashion for India and the World. “We need to take several initiatives in order to make Handlooms fashionable,” said Modi.
