New Delhi: The Centre may consider pilot programmes on organic farming based on successful experiments conducted in Karnataka.

Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh today held detailed discussions with a team of experts from Karnataka on organic farming to understand salient features of successful experiments in the southern state in organic farming, according to an official statement.

Experts, including those involved with similar programmes in Karnataka, made presentations before Agriculture Minister, Agriculture Secretary and senior officers highlighting the successful components of the programmes that were running in Karnataka.

"It was felt that experiments in organic farming in Karnataka can be considered for pilot programmes and if found suitable, can be replicated in different parts of the country," the statement said.

Organic food production stood at nearly 4 million tonnes in 2010-11, according to the government data.
