New Delhi: Industry body Ficci on Thursday said that it expects the UK government's plans to raise minimum salary thresholds for skilled workers and limit the number of work permits will not impinge upon the contribution made by professionals from India.
The industry body also said that the proposals, including introduction of new business levies for businesses employing migrant workers, are likely to put many businesses off employing professionals from countries like India.
"The contribution made by the highly qualified and trained professionals from India to the UK industry and economy, just like elsewhere, is widely acknowledged and we hope that any new set of measures that the UK government may introduce does not impinge on this valuable source of economic contribution," Ficci Secretary General A Didar Singh said.
The British government has unveiled plans like raising minimum salary thresholds for skilled workers and limiting the number of work permits as part of a fresh crackdown on immigrants from outside the European Union, measures which are likely to affect Indians.
The plans, announced by David Cameron during Prime Minister's Questions in the House of Commons yesterday, are also designed to protect domestic workers from being undercut by foreign workers and part of the government's efforts to boost the number of apprenticeships.
