Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Tuesday recommended media ownership, cross-holding and control rules for news and current affairs for television and newspapers.

TRAI said that ownership restrictions on corporates entering media should be seriously considered by government and media regulator: Trai.

The regulator also sought barring entry of political and religious bodies, central and state government ministries into broadcasting and TV channel distribution.

TRAI in its recommendations stressed on strengthening arm's length relationship between Prasar Bharati and government and taking measures to ensure functional independence and autonomy.

With respect to the "media regulator", TRAI said: "Government should not regulate the media; There should be a single regulatory authority for TV and print mediums; the regulatory body should consist of eminent persons from different walks of life, including the media. It should be manned predominantly by eminent non-media persons."
