ONGC introduces HF technology in Tripura

ONGC Asset undertook hydro-fracturing job in Khubal in North Tripura district to assess actual reserves of the field and in Baramura in West Tripura district to enhance production from tight sands.

Agartala: The Tripura unit of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has introduced highly technical Hydro-fracturing (HF) job procedure to intensify exploration of natural gas for supply in different projects of the state, an ONGC official said Sunday.

"We have introduced this (HF) technology to intensify gas exploration to meet the growing demands of the state", ONGC's Tripura Asset Manager, V P Mahawar said.

ONGC Asset undertook hydro-fracturing job in Khubal in North Tripura district to assess actual reserves of the field and in Baramura in West Tripura district to enhance production from tight sands.

ONGC made discovery of commercial gas in Khubal area in February 2009 and completed drilling of seven exploratory out of which 2 wells are gas bearing. To arrest the declining production of the ageing Baramura field and to enhance productivity from tight reservoir sands of this area, it was decided to undertake hydro-fracturing, he said.

He said the ONGC has decided to engage two more high power rigs at Khubal to explore two more gas well to know the true potential of gas reserve there.

Regarding the state government's initiative to set up a fertilizer plant in Unakoti district, Mahawar said,"investment will be made only after assuring of gas supply to the plant at least for 15 years".

"We have intensified our exploration drive by applying high technology to recover gas from the area," he said.

"We expect to receive 20,000 or 25000 lakh cubic meter gas from a well where HF technology was introduced", he claimed.

The oil giant has drilled 190 wells in the state so far, out of which gas was found in 94 wells- which is an encouraging trend.
