Infosys Prize 2014 announced for 6 categories

The Infosys Science Foundation Thursday announced winners of the Infosys Prize 2014 across six categories.

Bengaluru: The Infosys Science Foundation Thursday announced winners of the Infosys Prize 2014 across six categories.

Now in its sixth year, the Infosys Prize honors high caliber researchers for impactful contributions to their fields, which include Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, Physical Sciences and Social Sciences.

It also announced that Infosys CEO Vishal Sikka would join the Board of Trustees of the Foundation.

The awards were announced by the trustees at a press conference here today.

Winners of Infosys Prize 2014 are Jayant Haritsa - Professor, Supercomputer Education and Research Centre (SERC) and Chair, Department of Computer Science and Automation (CSA), Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore for Engineering and Computer Science; Shamnad Basheer- Founder and Managing Trustee, Increasing Diversity by Increasing Access (IDIA), Bangalore for Humanities; Shubha Tole - Associate Professor and Principal Investigator, Department of Biological Sciences, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai for Life Sciences.

The prize was also bestowed upon Madhu Sudan - Principal Researcher, Microsoft Research New England and Adjunct Professor, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science (EECS) department and Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for Mathematical Sciences; Srivari Chandrasekhar - Scientist G, Organic Chemistry Division, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (CSIR-IICT), Hyderabad for Physical Sciences.

Esther Duflo - Abdul Latif Jameel Professor of Poverty Alleviation and Development Economics,Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has won the Infosys Science Prize 2014 for Social Sciences.

The prize consists of a purse of Rs 55 lakh, a 22 carat gold medallion and a citation certificate for each category. The award ceremony will be held on January 5, 2015 in Kolkata, where President Pranab Mukherjee will felicitate the winners.
