Energy sector gains much needed focus in Budget 2014-15

Unveiling the Union Budget 2014-15, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced several initiatives for the energy sector.

New Delhi: Unveiling the Union Budget 2014-15, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Thursday announced several initiatives for the energy sector.

The Finance Minister proposed to allocate an initial sum of Rs 100 crore for preparatory work for a new scheme called “Ultra-Modern Super Critical Coal Based Thermal Power Technology” to promote cleaner and more efficient thermal power.

Jaitley also announced comprehensive measures for enhancing domestic coal production with a stringent mechanism for quality control and environmental protection.

As regards new and renewable energy, the Finance Minister proposed to take up Ultra Mega Solar Power Projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Laddakh in J&K. A sum of Rs 500 crore has been allocated for this purpose.

Further, the minister said the usage of piped natural gas will be rapidly scaled-up in a mission mode as it is clean and efficient to deliver.
