BlackBerry cites pre-release leak for BBM on Android delay

BBM for third-party platforms was supposed to be released by 22 September.

Johannesburg: BlackBerry has cited the pre-release leak of its BBM feature for Android and iOS for its official delay.

The company has halted the roll-out of the messenger to Android and iOS platform, which was earlier only available on BlackBerry, and said that the unreleased version has impacted data traffic.

According to News24, BBM for third-party platforms was supposed to be released by 22 September, but many users were not able to access the software and others were exposed to fraudulent applications.

Head of BBM at BlackBerry, Andrew Bocking said that the company was aware of the issue with the unreleased version of the BBM for Android app adding that the company was not able to block users on the unreleased version and that the company decided to suspend the rollout.

Bocking explained that the team is now focused on adjusting the system to completely block the unreleased version of the Android app when they go live with the official BBM for Android app.

The report said that BBM has around 60 million active users and the extension of the service on third-party platforms is seen as a way for BlackBerry to compete in the industry dominated by rivals like Google and Apple.
