When South Korean electronics giant Samsung unveiled the Galaxy S5 at the World Mobile Congress (WMC) 2014 at Barcelona in February, rival HTC Corporation, the Taiwanese group, was the first to take a dig at it.
HTC had tweeted, "Buyer's remorse: Coming soon to S5 owners. March 25."
True to the date, HTC Corporation on March 25 unveiled the new One M8, the smartphone with the first dual camera. And many have questioned if it would be the killer for Apple and Samsung.
Whether the HTC One M8 is a "Buyer's remorse" is yet to be seen but there is no denying that it will give Samsung a tough competition in the market with its spectacular features. But then, Samsung is Samsung and it won't be easy for the Taiwanese company.
Let's take a look at the features and specifications of Samsung Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8.
DISPLAY: Good quality screen display from both here as HTC One comes with a 5-inch super LCD 3 capacitive touch-screen (1080x1920 pixels) and pixel density of 441 ppi while Galaxy S5 comes with a 5.1-inch super AMOLED capacitive touch-screen (1080x1920 pixels) but a slight lower pixel density at 432ppi. That should not really make much of a difference.
BODY: HTC One M8 comes with a body size of 146.4 x 70.6 x 9.4 mm and weight 160 g while Samsung Galaxy S5 comes with a body size of 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm and weighs slightly lighter too at 145 g.
PROCESSOR: Tough competition here too as Galaxy S5 comes with a 2.5 GHz Quad-core Krait 400 Qualcomm MSM8974AC Snapdragon 801 processor with Adreno 300 while the HTC One M8 also comes with the same processor but for a Qualcomm MSM8974AB Snapdragon 801. Moreover, HTC has 2.3 GHz Quad-core for the US and Middle East countries.
However, in India Samsung will reportedly use a Octa-core Exynos Processor (1.9GHz quad-core + 1.3GHz quad-core).
OPERATING SYSTEM: Both the smartphones operate on Google's latest operating system, Android 4.4.2 KitKat.
MEMORY: Again, both Galaxy S5 and HTC One come with a 16GB and 32GB internal memory variants. These can be expanded to 128GB with the help of microSD cards. However, again in India, Samsung comes with a 16GB internal memory that is expandable to 64GB with microSD card. Some reports say the 32GB variant might be available too.
RAM: Both the smartphones come with a 2GB RAM.
CAMERA: Samsung comes with a 16MP rear camera (5312 x 2988 pixels) with LED flash and a secondary camera of of 2 MP that can record a HD video of 1080p@30fps. But HTC has for the first time among smartphones come with a dual camera system. The dual camera is of 4 MP with 2688?1520 pixels and a dual-LED (dual tone) flash. It also comes with a secondary camera of 5MP that can record a HD video at 1080p@30fps.
PRICE: The Samsung Galaxy S5 has been priced from Rs 51,000-Rs 53,000. However, the price for HTC One M8 has not been confirmed yet. Speculations are that it could be priced between Rs 50,000-Rs 55,000.
BATTERY: The HTC One comes with a non-removable 2,600 mAh battery while the Galaxy S5 comes with a 2800 mAh battery with Ultra Power Saving Mode. HTC claims of a battery saver that can let users use the last 10 percent of battery for 30 hours on the basic mode.
UNIQUE FEATURES: Both boast of some of the greatest features one can see in any smartphones. Samsung boasts of some great features such as waterproof, dust-proof, finger print security, Ultra Power Saving Mode and a heart rate sensor (health tracker).
On the other hand, HTC One M8 boasts of the first time ever dual camera on smartphones, a killer metal design, Sense 6, power saving mode that the company claims can run the last 10 percent of battery for the next 30 hours on basic mode.
There is no denying that both the smartphones have some of the best features in the market and are quite at par with each other. But at the end of the day, it all depends on one's need.
