Kolkata:Triumph, the legendary UK super premium motorcycles brand is betting big on Indian market after starting operations in the country 11 months ago.
"India is a strategic market for Triumph. Since the last 11 months, more than 1000 motorcycles have been sold which is beyond expectations," Vimal Sumbly, Triumph Motorcycles India managing director said Wednesday.
Launching the first dealer outlet in the east here, Sumbly said by 2015 the expected sales would be around 1300 units and by 2017 the company was expecting to sell 2000 units.
Competing with brands like Harley Davidson, Ducati, Kawasaki and Suzuki in the top-end segment, Triumph already has a market share of 15 percent putting it in the number two slot, he said.
Currently, the company is assembling the motorcycles at its Manesar facility. The CKD units are brought from Thailand and UK.
"With Thailand having a production facility, there is no need to set up a manufacturing base in India as it will increase the cost," he said.
The company today showcased motorcycles in the range 675 cc to 2294 cc with prices starting from Rs 5.7 lakh to Rs 22 lakh.
Triumph would open 20 dealer outlets by 2017 from 10 at present, Sumbly added.
