GM India hopes to cross one lakh car sales this year

Upbeat about prospects of its new models, General Motors India Thursday said it was hopeful of crossing the one lakh car mark this year.

Kolkata: Upbeat about prospects of its new models, General Motors India Thursday said it was hopeful of crossing the one lakh car mark this year.

"We are hopeful of one lakh car sales this year," GM India director sales Vikas Jain said here today.

Jain said the new SUV model Enjoy is the third from GM's Chinese partnership with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC).

The positioning of Enjoy and that of GM's existing SUV Tavera are completely different, according to officials. Tavera's success is more in the commercial segment while Enjoy will attempt to position itself as a family car, they added.

In 2012, GM sold 92,000 units down from 1.11 lakh sales registered in 2011.

In the beginning of this year, industry expectation on growth was 6-8 percent but with the trend from first four months it seems the market could remain flat, GM India VP sales Rajesh Singh said.

He, however, said in the current auto market scenario it is very difficult to predict the market.

General Motors India recently reported a 2.39 percent increase in sales at 8,196 units in April 2013, company sources said.
