Mizoram Speaker Hiphei resigns from post, House and Congress; joins BJP

AIZAWL: Mizoram Speaker Hiphei on Monday resigned from his post, House and the Congress. His resignation comes a day after a senior leader Bharatiya Janata Party leader had said that Hiphei would join the saffron party. Hiphei, a veteran leader, was elected to the Assembly from the Palak constituency.

The BJP leader had said that Hiphei had recently met the central leaders of the saffron party.

Hiphei said he submitted his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker R Lalrinawma who had accepted it. Hiphei said he also resigned from the ruling Congress party and would join the BJP.

Mizoram, the only state in the north-east under the Congress rule, will go to the polls on November 28. 

Several senior Congress leaders recently left the party and joined the opposition Mizo National Front.
