New Delhi: Former Pakistani president and army chief general Pervez Musharraf on Friday termed the apex court verdict against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif as “historic” and said “he is his own worst enemy”.
After the supreme court verdict on Sharif, Pakistan will now be heading towards the right direction, the News Nation quoted Musharraf as saying.
The former general reportedly said that Sharif’s ouster would eventually end corruption in important government offices.
He also lauded Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan for efforts to expose Sharif in the Panama case.
“The problem is with Nawaz Sharif and not others. It was the third time he could not complete his term as a prime minister.
“I have seen Sharif very closely, he lacks leadership qualities.
“He doesn’t know how to govern and his intentions were corrupt.
“He is his own worst enemy,” the report quoted Musharraf as saying.
Pakistan's Supreme Court on Thursday disqualified Sharif from holding public office after it found him guilty in the Panama Papers case. The PML-N leader later resigned from the post.
Musharraf said the court's decision on Panama papers will bring positive impact to the country.
"It’s a good decision. The entire nation is jubilantly distributing sweets," he was quoted as saying.
Pronouncing the verdict, the five-judge bench also “ruled to send references against the PM, his children Maryam, Hussain and Hasan, son-in-law and Finance Minister Ishaq Dar to an accountability court.
The Attorney General said that the bench disqualified the Prime Minister for life.
Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, who headed the bench, said all material collected by the Joint Investigation Team would be sent to an accountability court within six weeks.
He said cases should be opened against Maryam Nawaz (Sharif's daughter), Captain Muhammad Safdar (Maryam's husband), Hassan and Hussain Nawaz (PM Sharif's sons) as well as Prime Minister Sharif and a judgement should be announced within 30 days.
